........TAYLOR NAMED ZIMBABWE CAPTAIN......

THE PETER CHINGOKA Zimbabwe Cricket board held meeting in Harare today and named Brendon Taylor as the new national team captain. This is a move that means that Elton Chigumbura has handed over his responsibilities as the leader of the team.                                                                               Taylor’s captaincy spell begins with a triangular series that features Australian and South African A sides. Later this year on Zimbabwe make a long awaited return to test cricket starting with a one off match against the lowly ranked Bangladesh. New Zealand resumes its tour fulfilment in Zimbabwe while Pakistan is also expected just before the start of the domestic season.Chigumbura took charge of the team from Prosper Utseya during the tour of India and Sri Lanka in a tri-angular series last year. In his reign he led the team during the 2011 ICC World Cup and was heavily criticized for his alleged inability to make ‘sound’ decision. He was once rumoured to have quit the job but however he hadn’t officially dumped the team. In an interview with OFF THE CREASE, Chigumbura wished Taylor the best of luck on his appointment.  “It has truly been an honour to lead the team; I wish BT all the best. I am willing to assist him as much as I can” he said. “Am sure I will have to concentrate on my game seeing Test cricket is upon us” he added.

Taylor has 11 One Day International half centuries to his name and a top ODI score of 145 not out against South Africa in 2010. He currently turns out for the Kwekwe based franchise, Midwest Rhinos, and has been defined by critics as a good all round player whose contribution to the team has been invaluable. Taylor told The Mail that he was looking forward to the challenge and understood the importance of his responsibilities. “It’s an honour to take over from such a great leader, he has done his best. I wish him well and certainly know that he will continue, together with other former captains to provide the guidance along the way” he said. “It’s also an honour to lead the team, am sure we are yet to enjoy the good times as a unit” added the soft spoken Taylor.Responding to questions on what his immediate plan was and his prospects on the return to Test cricket, Taylor pointed out how important it was to stay focused on hard work. “We have been working hard and it would be important to carry on with these efforts” he said.“Zimbabwe is definitely ready to play Test cricket again, it’s not going to be easy but we are ready for anyone. Let’s be realistic we have great players in the team and it’s a matter of applying ourselves fully to the task at hand “said the new skipper.The assistant coach Steve Mangongo said the technical team was behind the new captain and hoped he would lead from the top. “BT is a solid batsman who has matured and gained enough experience to lead” he said. “As a young team we expect his performance should inspire the rest of the team” he added
Taylor has the backup of the administration and the ZC managing director Ozias Bvute said the young man had matured and was experienced enough to lead the misfiring team. "We have watched him develop into a mature, experienced player and we stand fully behind him in his new role," said Bvute.
